Neerja is an upcoming 2016 Indian biographical film directed by Ram Madhvani starring Sonam Kapoor in titular role and Shabana Azmi andShekhar Ravjiani in supporting roles. The film was produced by Atul Kasbekar under the banner of Fox Star Studios.[1] The film revolves around the factual hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi, Pakistan specifically focusing on flight attendant Neerja Bhanot. This film shows how the young flight attendant fought for the lives of her passengers.

The film is based on the life of Neerja Bhanot who was shot dead by terrorists who hijacked the Mumbai-New York flight at Karachi on 5 September 1986.[2]

In January 2015, it was reported that Sonam Kapoor had been selected to play the role of Neerja Bhanot the senior flight crew member, who became the youngest recipient of the bravery award, Ashok Chakra in her biopic. It was also reported that The biopic has been tentatively titledNeerja and will be directed by ad filmmaker Ram Madhvani and that Sonam Kapoor would start shooting for the film once she wrapped up the promotions of Dolly Ki Doli and completes the schedule of Sooraj Barjatya's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.[4]
Shabana Azmi was reported to play a very crucial role in the film alongside Sonam.[5] It was later revealed that Azmi would play Neerja’s mother.[6]
Shekhar Ravjiani, one half of the Bollywood's famous music directing duo Vishal–Shekhar consisting of Shekhar himself and Vishal Dadlani, was the last main character to be cast and it was reported in May 2015 that the musician will be making his acting debut playing Neerja Bhanot's lover in the film.[7] It was reported that though it won't be a lengthy role, it will be a pivotal one for the film.[8]

Rucha Pathak, head of creative and development, Fox Star Studios, said in a statement. "When we heard the script of Neerja, we immediately knew we wanted to make the film. It's the kind of content that Fox Star instinctively believes in and wants to back. Captained by Ram Madhvani, and with Sonam Kapoor and Shabana Azmi, Neerja, we believe, is a cracker of a film."[9]Principal photography of the film began around 19 April 2015, and is set to release on February 19, 2016.[10] The film's music has been composed by Vishal Khurana and the lyrics have been penned by Prasoon Joshi.[11][12] The film's music rights were acquired by T-Series.[13][14] The story and screenplay was penned by Saiwyn Quadras and the dialogues by Sanyuktha Chawla Sheikh.
The first look was released and Sonam Kapoor was seen in a uniform, red lips with shoulder-length straight hair neatly pinned up. The first poster of the film was out with just the name of the film on it. Sonam shared the poster on Twitter saying, "The story that needs to be told! Here's the #Neerja logo! Trailer out this Thursday! @foxstarhindi @BlingLive".[15][16]
The films official trailer launches on 17 December 2015 on Fox Star Studios YouTube channel and social media properties. The trailer launch event will be attended by the late Neerja Bhanot's real brothers Akhil Bhanot and Aneesh Bhanot.[17] The films official logo was launched on 15 December 2015; 2 days prior to the trailer launch by Kapoor on her official Twitterhandle and there by on Fox Star Studios social media properties. It was received well by the audiences and the film fraternity was a buzz with this news.[18] Filmyfolks reviewing the trailer wrote, "Trailer of "Neerja" biopic has came out. It leaves everyone speechless and Sonam Kapoor is best fit in her role. This trailer says everything about the movie."[19]
